Re: Do we want to build a snowman?

I wrote some of them in a thread on Fedi (I know, a bad way of writing things down): https://niu.moe/@Wolf480pl/102011474655604975 But then after talking with RX14, I changed/refined some of those ideas. I should really write them down properly, but here's a summary: Simple, telnetable, line-based. ...

Re: [Assembler/C] How I Ended Up Writing A DNS Client and IRC Client In Assembler

Nobody respects the RFCs anyway… Yeah, the IRC RFCs are like... The de-facto standard is RFC 1459 plus some cherry-picked parts of RFC 2812, plus some non-RFC extensions that conflict with RFCs, eg. ISUPPORT. And then on top of that de-facto standard, you have IRCv3. Which nicely standardizes the d...

Re: Do we want to build a snowman?

There's something kind of beautiful about being able to crack open telnet (or ssh or whatever) and just type the commands that the server expects? [...] The 'old unix'y feel of these systems is really sweet and comfy, idk. Yes, so much this. But that's not the main reason I want my protocol to be u...

Currently I'm NEET while I finish up some projects and courses.
Sorry for nitpicking, but wouldn't "finishing up courses" count as "education" and therefore not NEET?

Re: Do we want to build a snowman?

I wanted to design a chat protocol, somewhat in the spirit of ye olde IETF protocols (simple, telnetable), but better matching todays requirements. I have a rough idea for what the protocol would look like, may describe it later if you want. The plan is to: - Understand the existing protocols (IRC, ...

Re: Hi, I'm Wolf480pl

The current setup is fine. I just find building PCs fun, and also kinda want to build a really powerful one that has much more computing power than I have a use for. Well, I could also use some spare machine that I can wipe and do a clean OS install every other week. For experimenting with Xen and s...

Re: [Assembler/C] How I Ended Up Writing A DNS Client and IRC Client In Assembler

Well, if I was writing an IRC client in asm, I'd just make the user provide the server's IP address instead of hostname, at least initially. But that's just me being lazy.

Re: [Assembler/C] How I Ended Up Writing A DNS Client and IRC Client In Assembler

Sounds like a long way to go. IIRC a DNS client, especially an async one, is hard to write even in C, let alone asm. Btw. do you need the DNS for anything other than resolving the server you're going to connect to? On the server side you'd obviously need to look up clients' reverse DNS and all that,...
